The Andrea Doria was a luxury cruise liner in the Italia Cruise line. It sank off the coast of Nantucket in 1956. Fifty souls were lost.
Maggie B., one of our clients, asked us to design a very special pendant incorporating an Italian blue glass bead that was salvaged from this ship wreck. It is one of the very few beads recovered from this wreck. The bead came from the ship's gift shop which later collasped and is no longer accessible. Maggie's friend, world renowned diver and salvor, Gary Gentile, gave her the bead as a gift. The design of the crown is modeled from the ship's china pattern.
Together with Maggie we designed this beautiful pendant. The bead is suspended from the 14K yellow gold crown, forever a reminder of a time gone by. As Gary Gentile writes in his book Andrea Doria the Dive to an Era "To a collector, these artifacts are invaluable; to me they are priceless. They are more than mere ornaments, more than trinkets, more than yesteryear's art. They are the culture of an era. They do not represent only the majesty of the Grand Dame of the Sea, they are rare examples of the luxury, the charisma and the mystique of a time when ocean liners plied the broad reaches of the Atlantic and transported rich and poor alike between the old world and the new."
